Background
I joined the University of Michigan’s student game studio WolverineSoft as a creative producer and designer for Soul of the Forest, a 40-person project, that shipped to Steam in May 2024 and is also available on itch.io. The game is an adventure RPG with turn-based combat, and as creative producer I led the production and design for the Encounters squad, comprised of 6 developers and 4 artists.
Soul of the Forest is a case study of narrative-driven combat games like Undertale and Franken, where the goal is to unite the creatures of the forest and save them from the tyrannical king.
My design work involved the following:
Writing initial combat design concept documents
Designing the battle UI/UX
Iterating according to technical feasibility
Designing unique minigames for each of the 9 battles
My production work involved the following:
Creating the production timeline for the Encounter squad
Agile sprint planning and management of my squad members across 4 departments (programming, art, audio, narrative)
Reviewing programming work to check for alignment with design plans
Making decisions in regards to scope
Communication with studio leadership and other producers regarding my squad
Conducting weekly check-ins with my squad members to keep them on track
Managing Jira and version control
Scheduling one-on-one meetings as needed to ensure work being done matched my design documents
